SALVADOR
The most beautiful part of Salvador is the historical part called
Pelourinho. Numerous historical buildings remind of the colonial past of the first brazilian capital. Until 1815 Salvador was the biggest port of the country. A majority of the sugar from the northeast as well as
gold and diamonds from the mines of the south took its way over Salvador. In this golden age magnificent houses, churches with sumptuous gold decoration and beautiful places were build. Many
houses where carefully rebuild and now have stores and restaurants. According to the Unesco the Pelourinho is the best and biggest accumulation of colonial architecture of the 17th and 18th century in America.
Here there are many restaurants and Bars. The better restaurants often are on the first flor. Many bars have tables on the streets and places. Tourists and Salvadorians sit there until
the morning hours. Everywhere is music: Samba, drums and reggae. You have to get used to the beggars. They even come in the road restaurants to the tables and ask not only for money, but also for remainders of your meal.
Each tourist should have a look inside the beautiful old churches at the Pelourinho. Until 6 o'clock in the evening they are open. Next to the Cathedral is the afro-brazilian museum, where one can study the history of the
Brazilian slaves and the origin of the still active Candomble religion. There are 15 more museums in Salvador.
